Muslim Prayers: Salah Timings, Adhan and Rakat
Salah (meaning ‘prayer’ or ‘supplication’) is also known as Namaz. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, which form the core beliefs and practices of the religion:
- Shahada: Profession of faith — there is no God but Allah, and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is His messenger.
- Salah: Ritual prayer performed five times a day.
- Zakat: Charity and almsgiving.
- Sawm: Fasting during the month of Ramadan.
- Hajj: Pilgrimage to Makkah.
Salah is obligatory for adult Muslims. Prayer times are determined by the movement of the Sun:
- Fajr: Dawn, before sunrise.
- Dhuhr: Midday, after the Sun passes its highest point.
- Asr: The late part of the afternoon.
- Maghrib: Just after sunset.
- Isha: Between sunset and midnight.
Praying in the Masjid & Jumuah
While Muslims can pray anywhere, many pray in congregation in a masjid (mosque). This fosters a sense of unity and equality before God.
Jumuah: Apart from daily prayers, the Friday noon prayer is obligatory. It includes a sermon (Khutbah) and replaces the standard Dhuhr prayer on that day.
Adhan: The Call to Prayer
The Adhan is delivered from the masjid by a muezzin. During the call, the Takbir (Allahu Akbar — “God is Great”) is recited to invite the faithful to prayer.
The full Adhan text:
Allahu Akbar (God is great)
Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah (I bear witness that there is no God except the One God)
Ashadu anna Muhammadar Rasool Allah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God)
Hayya’ ala-s-Salah (Hurry to the prayer)
Hayya’ ala-l-Falah (Hurry to success)
Assalatu khairum-minan-naum (Prayer is better than sleep — only for Fajr)
Allahu Akbar (God is Great)
La ilaha illallah (There is no God except the One God)
Rakats in Salah
A rakat is a single unit of Islamic prayer, consisting of specific movements and recitations. Below is the count of obligatory (Fard) rakats for each prayer:
| Prayer Name | Obligatory Rakats (Fard) | Time Period |
|---|---|---|
| Fajr | 2 Rakats | Dawn to Sunrise |
| Dhuhr | 4 Rakats | Afternoon |
| Asr | 4 Rakats | Late Afternoon |
| Maghrib | 3 Rakats | Sunset |
| Isha | 4 Rakats | Night |
*Other prayers include Tahajjud (night prayer), Tarawih (during Ramadan), and Eid prayers.
